Board Shadow Program

Board Shadow Organization Application Form

One key value component of Leadership Fort Worth’s Leading Edge (LE) program for emerging leaders is that graduates can choose to participate in the LFW Board Shadow Program. This program facilitates placement of the emerging leaders on local nonprofit boards for a year of shadowing. Placement is based on participation in a “SpeedBoarding” process, which considers the preferences of both groups and aims for an optimal match of board shadows with nonprofit boards. At the end of the one-year term, many Board Shadows are invited to become full board members.

Testimony from Board Shadow Organizations:

  • We have secured many new board members through this program. Our current board president and secretary both started through this Board Shadow Program. This program introduces us to people we might not have the chance to meet who bring new and fresh perspective to our board.
  • Participating in the Board Shadow Program has been a wonderful experience for us. Each shadow we’ve had has been very engaged in our organization.
  • Looking for a plethora of young leaders who are are ready AND interested in serving on your Board of Directors?  For the last several years, the Leading Edge Board Shadow program has introduced our nonprofit to some of our most active and engaged new Board members.  Without the Leading Edge Board Shadow program, we would never have met these young leaders who have really made a difference for us!
  • Our Board Shadow has been very responsible. We couldn’t ask for a better Board member. He was elected to a permanent Board position after three months.

Testimony from Board Shadows:

  • Because of LFW I was given the opportunity to sit down with a great organization, the Amon G. Carter Downtown Fort Worth YMCA.  The skills I gained through the Leading Edge program put me in a position where the Board was willing to welcome me on as a member immediately without going through the shadowing program.  I am grateful to LFW for connecting me with the Y and giving me the skills to hit the ground running as a board member for this important community organization.
  • My Board Shadow experience was great. Though I was a non-voting member of the BRIT board, I was given the opportunity to sit in on meetings and act as a board member. The experience gained has already been invaluable in my decision process about joining a board and understanding how decisions are made within a board. I am so fortunate to have had this experience.
